Many people have the mistaken impression that root canal treatment is painful. This couldn’t be further from the truth! A root canal is a procedure that’s needed to relieve pain when decay reaches the innermost portion of your tooth.

The doctors at Scottsdale Dentist AZ have been performing comfortable root canals for decades. Our team understands your hesitation and will do everything possible to make your treatment gentle and stress-free. We’re proud to say that many of our patients tell us that the procedure was the easiest root canal they ever had!

The Importance of Root Canals

Located deep inside your tooth is the pulp, a system of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues that help the tooth maintain its vitality. In this area you’ll also find a series of minute passageways known as root canals, which are interconnected with your body’s nervous system.

Pulp can become infected for a variety of reasons: gum disease, tooth decay, or traumatic tooth damage. If the pulp becomes irreversibly damaged, we must remove it from the tooth and seal the canals to save the tooth.

What to Expect During the Procedure

First, we won’t begin any treatment until we are sure that the affected tooth is completely numb. Our team will ensure that you’re comfortable with pillows, blankets, and other calming amenities. If you’re very apprehensive, we offer safe, effective nitrous oxide that will make you feel a little drowsy and very relaxed.

When you’re as relaxed as possible, one of our skilled doctors will gain access to the inner part of your tooth and, using special instruments, remove the infected pulp tissue. After we’ve cleared away all this material, we’ll wash and cleanse the root canals and fill them with a rubber-like substance. Finally, we’ll seal the access hole with a temporary filling to protect the tooth until a permanent custom crown can be created.

You may feel a bit of soreness after the procedure, but the really good news is that the acute, overwhelming pain you had when you came in for treatment is gone! In a few weeks we’ll fit you with a beautiful customized crown to restore your tooth to full function. Unless you choose the Same-Day crown(Cerec) method.
